Why would you choose Workseed as a learning platform?

Ease of use for all users

Workseed's design has taken into account the special features of vocational training.

Simplicity makes sense so the user interface is not covered with all possible information, but only with the relevant information at the right time. Our software is therefore suitable for students  with special needs.

Workseed is a browser-based web application and it works on mobile devices of all sizes. The application utilizes all features of mobile devices and students can therefore conveniently attach e.g. photos and video clips to learning tasks directly from the learning place.

Since workplace and internship supervisors play a central role in vocational training, we have taken into account their easy access to the platform. Of course considering the student’s data protection and privacy.

Teachers can visually monitor the progress of courses by student groups and individually. The platform monitors deadlines automatically and sends notifications about the events that require attention.

If you need support with the use of Workseed, you can find versatile support pages, which also contain up-to-date tips how to use the application efficiently. You can even develop yourself, for example, as a producer of pedagogically rich H5P content!

Development of competence-based learning in all learning environments

Workseed contains easy-to-use tools for implementing learning paths.

The fundamental part of the platform is the importing of the skill requirements or competence objectives from the curriculum or the study plan. You can then design  courses with multiple learning paths. The learning paths can cover all study phases e.g. from the acquiring of skills up to the final demonstration. The learning paths are built on the theory materials, practical exercises and often also demonstration tasks required to acquire knowledge and skills. Therefore the platform is designed to be used effectively in all learning environments, including workplace, training hall, online learning tools, training simulator, hobbies, etc.

The platform supports evaluation and continuous feedback of competences in accordance with the curriculum or study plan. The platform visualizes the student’s progress, accumulated and missing skills, making it easy for the student to be motivated to complete the course and in the end, the whole qualification.

Students can make progress on the learning path independently. The paths contain manually and automatically assessed assignments and the platform automatically prevents to start an assignment if the prerequisite is incomplete.  Workseed offers H5P editor for building interactive H5P content and you may link exercises from external digital learning environments, such as training simulators, VR/AR systems and other training solutions that support the LTI standard.

Management of workplace learning and training

You create a digital internship process that involves workplace and internship supervisors.

You can easily prepare training processes for different professions, including for example

  • training contract creation and approval
  • drafting, approval and reflection of the student’s personal goals
  • tasks to be executed before training
  • progress reporting during the training (e.g. digital diaries)
  • monitoring of working hours
  • midterm and final evaluation.

The internship process is based on communication between the student, internship supervisor and teacher, where the platform is actively used to guide the student, give feedback and document evaluations.

Cloud-based solution and versatile integrations

The implementation of SaaS (Software as a Service) cloud service is easy and fast for an educational institution without large implementation projects or IT investments.

A genuine cloud service guarantees seamless and safe use of the software, regardless of time zone and geographical location. We make sure that your data is always backed up and that the training platform complies with the requirements of the GDPR and the Web Accessibility Directive (EU).

During the deployment phase, we implement the necessary integrations with the educational institution’s information management systems, such as for example
– Microsoft Active Directory, which enables Single sign-on (SSO) with the educational institution’s Office 365 accounts.
– Automated data transfers to student information systems. (SIS). Two-way integrations supported for example student’s grade can be transferred to the SSI.
–  Linking of Moodle activities.
–  Integrations with the training simulators (e.g. Creanex SimTrainer) and learning tools offering LTI support (e.g. WondaVR).

Thanks to configurable GUI theme (colors and logos), all of our clients can make Workseed look and feel like their in-house application!

Did you know that vocational education teachers are often unhappy with the learning platform in use?

Many learning platforms have origins in the university world or elementary schools. Therefore, fitting them into vocational training is difficult or even impossible. As a result, teachers get annoyed due to

  • The operations do not enable the rationalization of key processes, such as the management of practical training periods.
  • The variety of platforms and the wide range of features cause confusion, and the implementation of even a simple thing cannot be done without asking support from an expert.
  • The learning platform does not integrate with the other IT systems, which increases unnecessary manual work such as filling the same information twice.
  • Learning platforms hosted in-house by educational institutions are often inadequately instructed for end users, e.g. in terms of pedagogical utilization.

However, it doesn’t have to be that way. With the help of a learning platform designed by the experts of Finnish VET education, many vocational colleges and Universities of applied sciences have been able to inspire teachers and positively impact on the productivity of the teaching staff.

Why does it make sense to use a learning platform designed for vocational training?

Frees up professional teachers' time for productive work

Vocational education differs from other forms of education in terms of processes. Training that take place at workplaces, which often causes extra administrative work for teachers if the data management process is not automatized. When the learning platform supports genuinely workplace learning, tripartite working becomes more effective and teachers can instead of hundreds of e-mails and traveling to on-site visits focus on the essential things such as students’ guidance.

Measure the development of students' skills comprehensively

Competency-based education model requires that the professional requirements, competence goals, evaluation criteria and the relevant reporting features are the core capabilities of the learning platform since the day #1. By gluing them afterwards into the learning platform often does not work as hoped. The situation often leads to an unpleasant result, where the features just gather dust due to poor usability.

Integrate the common subjects (theory) with the hands-on training

A special characteristics of vocational education is the combination of practical professional skills and the knowledge (theoretical skills) supporting it. Pedagogically, it is valuable that the student understands how and why the knowledge is related with the practical skills.

Many online learning environments suffer silos in their architecture, which makes it difficult to prepare learning tasks that consist of common subjects and professional task sections. As a result, assignments are prepared for their own domains, and teachers of theory subjects, for example, do not know whether students can apply their theoretical skills in practical tasks.

Digitize the training process to become paperless

A key feature of vocational training is the large amount of on-the-job training. It can be foreseen that the role of workplaces as a learning environment will be even more important the future. Since the overall responsibility for the students’ learning rests with the teacher even it happens outside school premises, it is particularly important that the workplace supervisors are involved in the learning platform to guide the student’s training, for example by giving feedback and making the skill evaluation.

In a well-designed learning platform, the necessary assessment forms  and learning assignments can be shared to workplace and internship supervisors by the student. Managing student internships online streamlines student guidance and reduces paperwork.

Offers support for personalizing studies

Not only the planning, but also the implementation of individual learning paths for each student is a legal requirement. On a traditional learning platform, the individualization is often difficult to implement, because the courses are static and cannot be personalized automatically. In this case, individualization requires a lot of manual work and planning from the teacher.

When the learning platform designed for professional education, the courses offers flexibility. For example, the platform instructs the student to redo a certain assignment if the student does not pass it. The platform also ensures on behalf of the teacher that tasks requiring advanced skills are not progressed before acquiring the basic level of skills.

Produces unique data for decision makers

After scaling up the learning platform to the production use, it starts producing unique quality metrics for the decision makers. For example, the educational institution can use the features of the platform to measure the quality of internships and use the data for isolating internship organizations where the learning results have not been the best. Teachers are offer e.g. training and other corrective support for the organization personnel to improve the environment for the students.

Increases students' activity

When the students are happy with the mobile usability of the learning platform, the students produce much more information for teachers about their own development when studying takes place outside the educational institution. For example, the digital diaries (with photos and video clips) running on a smartphone have proven to be effective way of making students’ achieved skills visible instead of written reports.

When the diaries are profession specific, the student’s user experience and motivation improve, because the documentation takes place exactly in accordance with the job description of the profession. The platform monitors the students’ activity and if the student is inactive, the platform automatically notifies the student.
