Workseed has launched the NursED online service, which will publish digital portfolios to streamline the reporting of practical skills of nursing and healthcare students and support the guidance of internships.
The first NursED portfolio is the Midwifery Student’s Logbook, developed in close collaboration with Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. It is a web-based application for documenting students’ professional development during internships.
Student midwife logbook makes it easier to demonstrate professional competence
The student midwife logbook is a digital portfolio for digitally reporting on participation in treatments and diagnostics during internships. Its content is based on the directive 2005/36/EC and it can be used by students to demonstrate that they meet the competence requirements for the midwife degree.
With the logbook, the student can:
Document learning flexibly using their own mobile device. Students can always have the logbook on them, and it cannot be lost. Students can make entries easily and have their clinical supervisor sign them on the same device. Supervisors do not need their own account and do not need to log in.
Change the language of the logbook. The logbook is designed to be multilingual to make it useful even in multilingual and international internships. At the moment, the logbook is available in English, Finnish, and Swedish.
Reflect on their learning. When making entries, students have the opportunity to write down free observations on their learning and work. Students can use their notes to reflect on their learning and improve on their work.
Demonstrate their competencies during job search. The finished logbook can be exported as a pdf. It can be annexed to a curriculum, even for international job searches.

The logbook makes supervising and guiding students more effective
While the logbook is designed to make it easier for students to report on their internship, it is also a valuable tool for teachers to supervise and guide their students. .
Teachers can use the logbook to:
Monitor internships in real time. Students can share their logbook with their teacher, which allows teachers to understand how their students are doing during work-based learning. Teachers can better understand what kind of learning opportunities their students have had and what skills they have been able to practice.
Provide better guidance and identify problems. With increased awareness of students’ progress, teachers can provide better and more individualized guidance. For example, if a student repeatedly reports problems in a specific area or lacks opportunities to practice a specific task, teachers can provide more learning opportunities in the classroom or recommend simulator training.
Accumulate data for learning analytics. When enough students use the logbook, teachers can use the accumulated reports to better understand what kind of support their students usually need and how teaching can be improved.
