Energize internship planning with AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) and chatbots are unlocking exciting possibilities in higher education and work-based learning. These technologies have the potential to revolutionize real-time tutoring while easing the workload for educators. Although AI will never replace the unique human support that teachers provide, its ability to deliver clear, concise, and immediate feedback makes it an invaluable tool for enhancing the teaching process.

Despite its promise, many educators and academic institutions are still exploring how to harness AI safely and effectively. Generative AI, while innovative, is still an emerging technology that has yet to reach full maturity in educational settings. Technological limitations, a lack of AI literacy, unrealistic expectations, inadequate planning, and the inherently slow pace of change in large organizations all present barriers to fully using AI’s potential in education.

Although a variety of chatbots and AI assistants are currently available, relatively few focus specifically on the unique needs of work-based learning. This gap has driven Workseed to develop innovative tools tailored for managing internships and work placements.

How AI can support work-based learning

Effective remote tutoring and formative assessment are essential components of successful learning. In particular, continuous and constructive feedback plays a critical role in ensuring the success of internships and other forms of work-based learning.

However, providing sufficient feedback in work-based learning often presents challenges. Teachers frequently have limited opportunities to monitor daily learning when students are engaged in real-world environments. Offering meaningful, daily feedback to each student can also be time-consuming and difficult to sustain.

AI has the potential to revolutionize work-based learning by facilitating daily guidance, feedback, and lesson planning. By streamlining the feedback workflow for both students and teachers, AI can save time, enhance the quality of learning, and improve overall outcomes.

With AI-powered guidance, students can receive real-time and comprehensive feedback. They no longer need to wait for teachers to review plans or reports submitted through the learning environment. Instead, the system can provide initial feedback immediately. This feedback helps steer students in the right direction, identify clear mistakes, and offer actionable guidance, all while maintaining a high standard of support.

For teachers, AI can be a powerful time-saver. When students receive real-time feedback while completing exercises and can make corrections independently, the work submitted to teachers is likely to be of higher quality. This, in turn, enables teachers to focus on providing deeper, more valuable feedback while reducing the overall time spent reviewing assignments.

It’s important to note that AI is not a replacement for teachers as facilitators or feedback providers. Rather, it serves as a supportive tool that enhances the communication and guidance workflow. By providing real-time support for students and saving teachers valuable time, AI has the potential to transform work-based learning for the better.

Improve internship planning with Workseed AI-assistant

The Workseed learning environment now provides an AI-assisted instant feedback to support students in planning personalized learning objectives for their internship.

This feature provides guidance to students on how to effectively formulate their personal objectives. Since these objectives should align with the competency requirements of the curriculum, students – particularly those new to work-based learning – often need support. With Workseed, students receive concrete, actionable suggestions for improvement instantly, enabling them to work more independently and confidently.

The AI evaluates various areas of competence and offers specific guidance. For instance, it alerts students when an objective is too general or lacks alignment with the required competencies. The feedback not only encourages students to reflect on their objectives from multiple perspectives but is also designed to be constructive and supportive. Unlike standard systems that rely solely on keyword recognition, Workseed’s AI delivers personalized feedback tailored to each student’s unique input.

This automated instant feedback accelerates the workflow significantly. Objectives are completed more quickly and with higher quality, ensuring they are ready for approval by teachers and trainee supervisors. Based on a pilot project, Workseed estimates that the feature can save trainee teachers 30 to 60 minutes of work time per student at the beginning of a traineeship, depending on the degree program.

While the benefits are clear, it’s important to approach AI-generated feedback critically. Students are not obligated to use the feature or to act on the feedback provided. Instant feedback serves as a complement to, not a replacement for, teacher guidance, supporting the overall process rather than replacing human input.

The feedback is crafted in a dynamic and encouraging tone, guiding students toward creating high-quality objectives using the SMART criteria: objectives that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.

The platform also integrates the curriculum’s competency requirements into its feedback, reflecting standards often based on nationally or EU-agreed competencies. Suggestions focus on how students can improve the quality of their objectives, ensuring alignment with these standards while fostering better learning outcomes.

AI-assistant was tested by XAMK University of Applied Sciences

AI-assisted instant feedback was developed and tested in collaboration with South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (XAMK), focusing on nursing education and practice planning.

The first practical pilot project, which centered on the use of AI, was conducted with a small group of participants. Despite the limited sample size, the post-pilot survey yielded promising results. In their open feedback, participants described the AI assistant as a “positive surprise” that effectively supported them in setting their learning objectives.

One participant noted, “The instant feedback was a really nice surprise and helped conveniently in setting the objectives.”

A clear majority of respondents found the AI-assisted instant feedback to be either somewhat or very useful. Most participants also rated the quality of the feedback highly and expressed interest in using the tool again in the future if given the opportunity.

Teachers also reported significant benefits from the AI assistant in internship planning. Traditionally, students would submit plans that were incomplete or lacked detail, requiring teachers to provide extensive suggestions for improvement. This process often involved multiple rounds of revisions before the plans met the necessary standards.

With the implementation of the Workseed AI assistant, more students submitted internship plans that were sufficiently detailed and relevant from the start. This reduced the need for corrections and saved teachers considerable time, streamlining the entire planning process.
