New AI Tools Improves Tutoring in TVET

Interest in AI in TVET and AI-powered tools for tutoring continues to grow. There are many opportunities where AI in TVET can enhance teachers’ workflows, such as drafting pedagogical materials, automating aspects of student counseling, monitoring progress, and creating adaptive learning content.

As new tools for AI in TVET have emerged rapidly, many educational institutions are still in the process of establishing workflows for their systematic use. Barriers to AI adoption include a lack of expertise, absence of clear plans or guidelines, resistance to change, and unrealistic expectations regarding its impact.

To date, very few AI tools have been specifically designed for TVET or practical skills training. This is why Workseed has chosen to focus on developing tools that better support vocational teachers.

What AI Can Offer Teachers and Students in TVET

Tutoring students and continuously assessing their progress are core responsibilities of vocational teachers. Formative assessment and regular feedback are essential in guiding students and helping them advance in their studies. Students greatly benefit from timely and constructive feedback on a day-to-day basis.

However, in practice, it can be challenging to provide sufficient high-quality feedback in vocational education. Teachers often have limited contact with their students, as much of the learning takes place in workplaces or other real-world environments. Additionally, crafting meaningful feedback can be time-consuming.

AI has the potential to enhance formative assessment and feedback for both students and teachers. It can deliver relevant feedback quickly, improving the overall workflow.

For students, AI can offer real-time feedback. Instead of waiting for a teacher’s response to every report or comment, students can receive immediate insights through the learning management system where they submit their work. AI can identify obvious errors or quality issues and provide valuable suggestions, helping students refine their assignments more effectively.

For teachers, AI can be a significant time-saver. With students receiving real-time feedback and making adjustments on their own, they are more likely to submit more polished and complete assignments. This reduces the need for multiple rounds of corrections, freeing up teachers’ time.

While AI in TVET won’t replace teachers or workplace supervisors, it can streamline the feedback process by offering real-time suggestions and ultimately saving teachers valuable time.

Workseed Real-Time Feedback Tool Enhances Internship Goal Setting

We’ve introduced a new feature for AI in TVET, a real-time feedback tool, in the Workseed LMS to provide automatic feedback for students as they plan learning goals for their internships.

This feature helps students formulate SMART goals for their on-the-job learning modules. Before starting an internship, students are required to set personal learning goals that align with their curriculum—an area where first- and second-year students often need extra guidance. The tool expands our services with AI in TVET through improved workflow for tutoring students prior to internships.

The real-time feedback tool provides real-time feedback, allowing students to work more independently. It tailors its suggestions based on key competencies defined by the education provider, helping students refine their goals by making them more specific, actionable, and aligned with their learning objectives.

Pilot project in South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences

The real-time feedback tool was launched for beta testing in the summer 2024 and was further developed in collaboration with the South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (XAMK). It was used to plan the internship period for nursing students.

The pilot project for our first AI in TVET tool was implemented for a small group of nursing students. Despite its relatively small sample, the subsequent user survey gave promising results. The real-time feedback tool was described as a positive surprise that provided genuine help in planning learning goals.

“The real-time feedback tool was a positive surprise and it made planning learning goals easier.”

A large majority of the surveyed users considered the tool somewhat or very useful. A large majority also considered the feedback they received high in quality and would use the tool again if they had the opportunity.
